A key consideration during the stadium renovation from 2000 to 2004 was conservation as a historical monument. To allow the theoretical restoration of the stadium to its pre-2000 state, all the additions and modifications had to be reversible. After the renovation, Germany’s third-largest stadium was awarded UEFA 5-star status.
