Complete refurbishment of the Old Locks Kiel-Holtenau
The Kiel Canal has been a national and international shipping lane for more than 100 years and is the second gateway to the Baltic Sea. In direct competition with the Skagen route, it is a competitive and environmentally friendly transportation route for handling the growing flow of trade in Europe with increased use of short-sea and coastal shipping. The large New Locks of the Kiel-Canal in Kiel-Holtenau, together with the small Old Locks, are crucial to operation and traffic flow. Due to their age, the Old Locks were in a very poor structural condition.
