Topping-out ceremony for the gas turbine plant in Darmstadt

On 2nd December 2010, the topping-out ceremony for the gas turbine plant in Darmstadt took place in the presence of those involved in the planning and construction of the plant.

This modern, highly efficient gas turbine plant with a total output of 100 megawatts is located on the “Knell” site between Frankfurter Straße and Sensfelderweg and is being built by HEAG Südhessischen Energie AG (HSE AG). With total costs of 55 million Euros, it represents one of the largest investment projects in the region. Designed for control energy purposes, it forms part of HSE AG’s sustainability strategy and is intended to compensate for the increasing proportion of fluctuating renewable energy sources. Construction started in June 2010 and the plant is expected to be connected to the grid in spring of 2012.

In his speech, HSE AG chairman Albert Filbert emphasized the fact that increased use of renewable energy is essential in order to preserve our natural environment. The fluctuating availability of sun and wind energy should be compensated using flexible gas-fired electricity plants instead of inflexible atomic power stations.

Walter Hoffmann, Mayor of Darmstadt, praised the plant as an important impulse for the region. HSE and its marketing subsidiary Entega have chosen a sustainable energy strategy that can be seen as a model for the whole of Germany. The gas turbine plant is an important component of this energy concept.

KREBS+KIEFER is responsible for checking the structural calculations and for construction supervision. The checking engineer for this project is Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Günter Ernst.
