On 22 October, 2018 the foundation stone for the new construction of the Biomedicum in Rostock was laid with a festive event. A new teaching and research building for the medical faculty of the university’s medical department is to be built in the Hanseatic district of the city by 2021.

Representatives of the university, from the construction and real estate company, the state, and the city were involved with the laying of the foundation stone and the filling of the time capsule. KREBS+KIEFER participated in the ceremony as well.

20 million euros will be invested into the buildings on the Schilling Avenue campus. 700 m2 are designated for new teaching facilities, with an additional 2400 m2 of floor space for research. The compact four-story building is designed as a reinforced concrete structure, its exterior walls tiled with a light-colored clinker facade.

The Biomedicum will be the place for the teaching and research sectors to engage with each other. Future or already qualified health care professionals and biotechnologists can further their education or dedicate themselves to research at the facility. This expands the Rostock University of Medicine offering greatly. The simulation arena is an extraordinary new feature. Realistic accident situations can be simulated onsite, giving the students a direct opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge.

KREBS+KIEFER provides the structural engineering services on commission of the state department for building and properties Mecklenburg Vorpommern (BBL M-V), including the engineering inspections during construction.
