Karlsruhe, city of construction sites – information tours on municipal projects

It‘s impossible to ignore: construction is in progress everywhere in Karlsruhe. The „U-Strab“ tramway tunnel and the city’s 300th birthday celebrations in 2015 are on the horizon. The city is now making a virtue of necessity by inviting interested citizens to information tours of construction sites – and Krebs und Kiefer is involved.

Currently, the largest project by a long way is „Kombilösung Karlsruhe“, the restructuring of local public transport in the city center, including a ca. 4 km long tunnel under the pedestrian area – and this is the main focus of attention.

The first construction site tour organized by Karlsruhe Stadtmarketing in cooperation with Karlsruhe Schieneninfrastruktur-Gesellschaft (KASIG) took place on 10th April 2014 and was led by Mr. Peter Müller, Leading Engineer at KREBS+KIEFER Karlsruhe and project leader for construction supervision of this major project. In addition to construction site procedures in general, the visitors showed interest in technical aspects which Mr. Müller, as a construction expert, was able to explain in detail.

Another subject which is currently arousing great interest is the installation of the tunnel boring machine for the urban tramway tunnel; this is planned for late summer. In cooperation with KASIG, Hochschule Karlsruhe presented the results of current project work on the undergraduate civil engineering course at the „Kombilösung“ information pavillion „K.“

Led by Prof. Dr. Jan Akkermann, Professor at Hochschule Karlsruhe and Managing Partner of KREBS+KIEFER, five groups of students worked on the design of an observation platform for the assembly of the tunnel boring machine.

In cooperation with Zerna Baumanagement, KREBS+KIEFER is responsible for construction supervision services for the urban tramway tunnel with its southern branch at Ettlinger Straße. Completion of the project, which is estimated to cost ca. 860 million Euros, is planned for 2019.
