Today’s biggest hospital construction site in the Southwestern region of Germany is the new construction of the St. Vincent hospitals in Karlsruhe. On June 22nd, 2018, after the completion of the building’s shell, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated here.

The ceremony was attended by numerous invited guests like Nick Schreiter from the architecture firm wörner traxler richter and Senior Site Manager Jerry Stepanik from the construction company Anton Schick; the keynote speaker was the Chairman of the Board, Richard Wentges, and the Director of Planning, Construction & Engineering of the ViDia Christliche Kliniken Karlsruhe, Rainer Magenreuter. Richard Wentges emphasized the importance of the "new Vincent” that marks another milestone in the direction of future-oriented medical concepts, envisioning a bundling of expertise and a clear focus to be implemented at the three merged clinic locations.

The new construction of the St. Vincent hospital was built according to plans by the architects wörner traxler richter on 43,000 m2 of floor space and will offer far more than 1000 rooms, including 13 operating theatres and 192 patient rooms with 341 beds.

The new construction was started in 2016 and in addition to the fact that it was erected next to a deep excavation pit with an underwater concrete base, some of the technical features of the new construction are the self-stabilizing prefabricated reinforced concrete façade and the helicopter platform that reaches diagonally across the building. The rescue helicopter of the DRF air rescue, whose traditional home is the St. Vincent hospitals, will be able to fly its rescue missions from this pad now.

Dr.-Ing. Ioannis Retzepis, Managing Director and partner at KREBS+KIEFER’s Karlsruhe location specialises in the two disciplines most needed for the construction project, solid construction and metal construction; he is the certifying engineer for the entire construction project, including the excavation pit.
