With its official opening by Mayor of Freiburg Dieter Salomon on 19th December 2013, the first construction phase of the main fire station in Freiburg ended shortly before Christmas.

Following a decision by the city council of Freiburg im Breisgau, the main fire station on Eschholzstrasse is currently being altered and extended. The overall concept includes integration of the voluntary fire service, additional parking spaces for fire service vehicles, office areas and an integrated control center.

For this purpose, the structure, which originated in the 60s, was altered, renovated and adapted to meet current safety standards. As part of the overall concept, the uses of some individual rooms were changed.

The alterations to the two-floor Building A, which is 70 m wide and 19 m deep, are being carried out while the station is in operation and have been divided into two stages:

  • Rearrangement of office space, alterations to the rest areas and the canteen plus modernization of the building exterior. The roof and wall structures now comply with the current EnEV specifications.
  • Installation of new doors and of a new technical control center on the roof.

The first stage was realized in the period from September 2012 to December 2013. Following the relocation of the fire services into the newly modernized area, the second stage will take place in the remaining areas of Building A in the period from February to October 2014.

The planned investment volume for the modernization of Building A of the main fire station in Freiburg is around 6 million Euros.

KREBS+KIEFER is responsible for local construction supervision in this project and is also producing part of the design and execution planning for the outside facilities.
