Together with Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit, Dr. Sigrid Nikutta, chair of the BVG executive committee and director responsible for operations, gave the symbolic starting signal for the tunnel driving machine.

From the start of the following week, this machine would be working its way from the starting shaft at Marx-Engels-Forum under Schlossplatz and "Unter den Linden" towards Brandenburger Tor, using the shield driving method of tunneling.

Along its ca. 1,6 km length, the tunnel will also pass under the River Spree and the Spree Canal. Three new stations are being built: "Berliner Rathaus", "Museumsinsel" and "Unter den Linden".

The tunnel driving work is expected to be completed as early as the end of 2014 and the new section of the U 5 is expected to go into operation from 2019. This section will close the gap in the underground railway network between Alexanderplatz and Brandenburger Tor.
