On 12 September 2016, the weather was kind to the employees of the KREBS + KIEFER branch offices in Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Stuttgart and Munich: At late-summer temperatures, the team started cycling on a tour totalling 45 km on the Upper Rhine plain.

The aim of the excursion was the construction site information centre for the railway tunnel in Rastatt. The twin bore tunnel, designed for a speed of 250 km/h, crosses the entire urban area of Rastatt with a length of 4,270 meters. With the tunnelling beneath them, the residents will be relieved in the future of the noise from the passing trains.

Dr (Engineering) Ioannis Retzepis, inspector for railway construction at the Federal Railway Authority and managing director of KREBS + KIEFER, is responsible for the structural engineering test of the tunnel access in open construction style.

In addition to introductions to the project, visiting the information centre and explanation of the ‘Building Information Modelling’ (BIM), which was used here for the first time, the team was able to gain during a guided tour an insight on the tunnel north-head driven by means of tunnelling machines
After a relaxed return, the convivial evening event suitably took place in the ‘Radhaus Karlsruhe’ restaurant.
