Following the topic of the day Tomorrow’s Megastructures, the construction process for the mega project of the Great Mosque of Algiers was presented at the 40th Symposium of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE).

The annual congress of the global association of structural engineers took place from 21 - 23 September 2018 in the French town of Nantes. Sustainable methods of conservation management were the focus, with extraordinary large-scale projects being the subject of discussion, including the current bridge collapse in Genoa Italy.

In his presentation about the realization of the Great Mosque of Algiers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Akkermann, Professor at the University of Karlsruhe and Managing Director of KREBS+KIEFER, emphasized the complexity of the earthquake-proof construction and the major requirements on stability and manufacture. KREBS+KIEFER was in charge of the general planning, including construction management for the large-scale project in collaboration with the architects KSP Jürgen Engel.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Richard Stroetmann, holder of the chair for structural steel engineering at the Technical University Dresden and Managing Director at KREBS+KIEFER, reported on resource-efficient building structures and the welding of high-strength steel.

The conference participants used the lecture sessions and the framework program for international networking and to exchange their experience and expertise in a wide variety of discussions.
