“Schlosslichtspiele” for the city’s 300th birthday celebrations

Karlsruhe turns 300 and keeps on growing – KREBS+KIEFER is there to help celebrate!

Karlsruhe was founded as a residential city in 1715 by Margrave Carl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach. The city and its citizens are celebrating the anniversary with a variety of activities. For instance, the 33rd Baden marathon, with participants from KREBS+KIEFER, is also taking place against a background of the festivities. But even after 300 years, Karlsruhe is still far from being “complete”. KREBS+KIEFER is involved with many of the construction sites that are currently a feature of the city.

Certainly the most important construction project in Karlsruhe, the combined tramline solution, reached an important milestone on 17 September 2015 with the cut-through to the shield tunnelling in the city railway tunnel. Mayor Dr Frank Mentrup pointed out once again the technical significance of the excavations carried out just 4.5 m under the ground surface — with a cutter head diameter of 9.32 m — that caused no appreciable damage thanks to an ingenious monitoring system. KREBS+KIEFER is jointly responsible for the local on-site supervision of the project.

The measures for the combined solution at the market place became a special type of construction site and made the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) the setting for a special exhibition entitled “The city is the star: art on the construction site”. For instance, the installation “Pulled by the Roots” by Argentinean Leandro Erlich was a playful and ironic depiction of the current construction work.

At the moment, Dr.-Ing Ioannis Retzepis, Verification Engineer for Construction Engineering and Managing Director of KREBS+KIEFER, is entrusted with the checking of various new building and renovation measures in Karlsruhe, such as for the new institute building for the University of Karlsruhe, three housing complexes owned by Volkswohnung Karlsruhe, the new printing centre for the Karlsruhe-based IT service provider Fiducia and the am Ostring pedestrian bridge.

The line-up at the Baden marathon on 20 September 2015 this time included two business teams in which three runners shared the stretches, as well as individual runners. All the runners achieved their goals and demonstrated their team spirit.
