On 18.03.2019 the ground-breaking ceremony for the extension of the existing pedestrian underpass at Lauda railway station took place. The eastern area of the station is to be redesigned in the course of this construction project in order to open up the area for pedestrians coming from the city center.

This extensive construction project also involves a new concept for the entire area: a new district is being developed on an area of 15,000 m². The mayor, Thomas Maertens, is convinced that this will significantly increase the attractiveness of the rural area and attract new investors. According to him, the construction measure is estimated at € 7.5 million. The two districts of Lauda and Königshofen will also grow together.

A Park+Ride facility is also planned so that the neighboring cities of Heilbronn and Würzburg can be reached quickly. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Reinhart, chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg, emphasized this and underlined the importance of this long overdue construction measure for the entire region. At the same time, he was pleased that this measure will soon be implemented in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn.

The new pedestrian underpass in extension of the existing underpass consists of a total of four frame blocks, which are separated from each other by space joints. The new 35 m long pedestrian underpass has a clearance height of 2.5 m and a clearance width of 5.0 m and crosses the seven tracks of DB line 4120 (Neckarelz - Würzburg). At the eastern frame block in the area of track 13, 7.4 m long wing walls are planned as the boundary of the track area. Extensive excavation pit shoring with auxiliary bridges is planned in order to maintain rail traffic during the construction period.

A major contribution to the realization of the pedestrian underpass is made by the construction engineering inspection. In the course of this examination, many special features of the project could be identified and clarified in good time, such as, for example, the change in the construction sequence, so that the transfer of persons can be carried out on time and in compliance with the planned closing breaks.

The structural inspection of the pedestrian underpass with the elaborate provisional construction equipment is carried out by Dr.-Ing. Ioannis Retzepis, managing partner of KREBS+KIEFER Karlsruhe and an expert for structural inspection in railway construction.
