In the presence of numerous well-known individuals, the symbolic start of construction for the noise abatement wall in Ditzingen, Germany, took place as part of the Federal Government’s programme for noise remediation on existing railways. This measure will also substantially reduce the noise level for residents with regard to Federal Highway 295, which runs in parallel.

The first speaker was Sven Hantel, Management Representative for Deutsche Bahn AG for the Federal state of Baden-Württemberg, and he explained the significance of the project. He pointed to the great importance placed on noise protection for the population and explained the efforts being made by Deutsche Bahn AG to improve primarily active noise protection. He added that the implementation of noise protection measures on existing stretches is being undertaken voluntarily by Deutsche Bahn AG, as there is no legal requirement to do so. The Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Nobert Barthle, summarised the position of the Federal Government on this issue.

As part of the voluntary noise remediation, the Government is investing EUR 130 million annually for existing stretches of line, in both active and passive noise protection measures. The State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Baden-Württemberg, Dr Gisela Splett, who is also the state representative for noise protection, also outlined the major efforts being undertaken by the State Government to achieve adequate sound protection for the population. Finally, Mr Michael Makurath, Mayor of Ditzingen, thanked all those involved (Federal Government, Deutsche Bahn AG, the Federal state, the Regional Commission of Stuttgart and the citizens’ group) for what has been achieved, the implementation of noise protection after a long planning phase, and hoped the construction work would progress speedily and without incident.

The technical verification for this measure will be carried out by Dr.-Ing. Ioannis Retzepis, Managing Director for KREBS+KIEFER in Karlsruhe and an auditor for railway construction.
