Steigerwald stadium

Conversion of the Erfurt Steigerwald stadium into a modern multi-purpose arena

Construction work has been proceeding on the grounds of the Steigerwald stadium in Erfurt since 05 January 2015. Based on the plans of HPP architects from Düsseldorf, the conversion is being carried out in construction phases while games are still being played at the stadium.

The dismantling of the earth wall grandstand was started on the east side. Subsequently, the new construction of the main building with the east grandstand in front then took place in this area. In June 2015, work to construct the north grandstand began and the dismantling of the old south grandstand will begin at the end of January 2016. The covered grandstand on the west side, which was built in 1994, shall remain fully intact.

The grandstands will be built primarily with reinforced concrete components. In the process, the standard distance of the stepped beams on which the grandstand step elements are placed is 8 metres. The end support of the stepped beams forms the pylon supports with the floor plan dimensions of 50 x 150 cm and a height of approximately 15 metres. The clamping of the overhanging steel roof occurs at the support head.
The new roof support structure consists of open-web girders on which steel purlins are laid. The overhang of the roof girders is 19.6 metres with a centre distance of 8 metres. For the roof, trapezoidal sheeting is provided.

The main building is a three-storey building with the floor plan dimensions of about 100 x 30 metres. A special feature is the 5.3-metre-high steel lattice girders over the large hall, whose span is 40 metres, so that no supports are required in this area.

On behalf of the building inspection office of the city of Erfurt, KREBS+KIEFER is implementing the structural design verification. The processing in our Erfurt office is directed by Dr.-Ing. Hans-Gerd Lindlar as the competent Verification Engineer. Currently, the construction costs are about EUR 45.8 million, whereby the Free State of Thuringia is supporting this project with EUR 33.3 million.

The new multi-purpose arena — home of the third division football club FC Rot-Weiß-Erfurt — should be completed in the summer of 2016 and will then offer space for 18,600 spectators. In addition to football matches and track and field competitions, conventions and concerts will also be held there.
