The tunnel is started in the closed construction technique by means of a mixed process consisting of excavation and blasting in the "New Austrian Tunnelling Method". Particular challenges in the creation lie in the comprehensive complexity of the mining works.

The section of the A 98 motorway with the Herrschaftsbuck Tunnel is currently the only new motorway construction in Baden-Württemberg. It crosses over almost the entire administrative district of Freiburg. After completion, the two-bore tunnel will lead road traffic from the East - West connection of the A 5 motorway to the A 81 motorway to Switzerland. The connection will promote the infrastructure in the border area to Switzerland, as stated in their official speeches by Minister of Transport, Winfried Hermann, a Member of the Regional Parliament and Mr Norbert Barthle, Parliamentary Secretary of State from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and Mrs Bärbel Schäfer, the President of the Freiburg Administrative Region.
