On 12 September 2018, as part of a colorful bridge christening ceremony, the Kienlesberg bridge was accessible for the first time to the local population. KREBS+KIEFER, along with Knight Architects (GB), was responsible for the building plans and structural design of the 270 m-long building for trams, pedestrians and cyclists throughout all its project phases.

In early December, after a three-year construction phase, operation of the new tram line 2 will commence as scheduled. Gunter Czisch, Senior Mayor of Ulm, proclaimed it with a proud wink in his eye “the most beautiful tramway bridge in Ulm, in Germany, in Europe and possibly the entire world”. Architect Bart Halaczek emphasized, in addition to the great importance of the construction project for the "Design City" Ulm, what excellent results are possible with European cooperation, especially now, with the looming Brexit event. Knight architects and KREBS+KIEFER have kept up the friendly relationship of collaboration since their mutual success in the 2012 competition.

After the start shot with a buzzer and a sparkling champagne christening the citizens of Ulm were allowed to take possession of their bridge, led by a high-spirited marching band and acrobats. When dusk came over the city the structure turned into a multi-faceted tapestry of lights and sounds for all the visitors to experience. The population of Ulm gave their “new kid” a joyous reception.
