The celebration marked the completion of the six-lane expansion from Mainz Süd interchange to the bridge over the River Rhine at Weisenau.

The core of this expansion project is the noise protection tunnel at Hechtsheim which is about 350 m long. This construction measure could be described as moving the A 60 in the area of Hechtsheimer Straße “from first floor level to basement level”.

While four traffic lanes remained operational throughout the construction site, construction initially only took place on the southern side; as soon as the four lanes had been re-routed through the northern tunnel tube which had been completed earlier, the southern tunnel tube was completed.

The section that was opened contains the junction-free entry and exit roads from the direction of Bingen towards the center of Mainz and Hechtsheim and from there in the directions of Bingen and Frankfurt.

KREBS+KIEFER was responsible for checking the structural designs for the shoring measures for the tunnel and for the Vogelsberg wall adjoining the tunnel to the south towards Frankfurt; this was designed as a permanently anchored bored pile wall.
