New Building For State Museum Schwerin

01/07/2016 - Opening New Building For State Museum Schwerin

After only about 1 ½ years of building, the opening ceremony for the museum extension can finally take place.

In the new building, the museum has about 800 square metres of additional exhibition space in two halls equipped with light ceilings without columns, to present its collections of art.

The glazed passage to the old building and internal connecting stairs in the new building allow you to go round the modern collections of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In addition to the constraints for listed buildings, constraints for the application as a UNESCO World Heritage Site needed to be met in the planning. A seamless, modern cube in high quality exposed concrete design with ground and stocked façade surfaces have been achieved.

As well as the wide-span ceiling systems, the exposed concrete façades cast on site were challenges for structural engineering in the construction trench and the building foundation.

To rule out damage to the historical wooden pile foundation of the old building, a dense trough construction with underwater concrete base has been planned.

The not very load-bearing ground underneath the building required a deep foundation on piles extending up to 30 m below ground level.

For the new construction, the structural engineering and also the structural physics and preventive fire safety has been provided by KREBS+KIEFER.
