Centre for Microsystem Technology and Materials Berlin
Room for development
Berlin is an important location for the growing sector of microsystem technology. To help establish young and small enterprises, a research and production centre was constructed in Adlershof, housing physical and chemical laboratories, office space and conference rooms, a workshop and a clean room.
The centre consists of an independent four-storey building facing towards the street and an arrangement of comb-like building wings to the side. All buildings are accessible via a glass passage running from east to west with wide-span connecting bridges, whose load-bearing elements are made from high-quality exposed concrete.
The emphasis during the planning phase was on environmental and economic sustainability. KREBS+KIEFER developed a load-bearing structure for the side combs with uniaxal spanned ceilings supported on perimeter and middle beams. This made it possible to use pre-cast ceilings, making the construction faster and more cost-effective. Through the use of geothermal heating and thermal activation of the solid ceilings with controlled night cooling, the building fulfils the highest energy standards.
