The Saale Elster viaduct is the longest railway viaduct in Germany and was planned by KREBS+KIEFER, as was the second longest – the Unstruttal bridge – measuring 2,668 m.

With foundations consisting of 390 large-diameter bored piles, the bridge crosses the Unstruttal valley at a height of up to 49 m. Its superstructure comprises a pre-stressed concrete hollow box consisting of six continuous beams supported by 41 slim piers. A reinforced concrete arch with a span of 108 m is positioned as a fixed point in the middle of each 580 m long continuous beam.

KREBS+KIEFER carried out the original design planning in accordance with Deutsche Bahn AG’s outline plan for the structure, which was later changed to a semi-integral construction by DB AG. KREBS+KIEFER was also responsible for on-site construction supervision. In addition to their professional competence and integrity, the team impressed with their enormous commitment, often working around-the-clock. Despite huge challenges such as the semi-integral construction method, the difficult subsoil and the insolvency of a construction firm, the quality of the results was excellent, which lead to Class A certification for the supplier.
