18 kilometres of weld seam

KREBS+KIEFER planned the extensive renovation of the listed building ensemble in Munich city centre and provided professional supervision throughout the building phase. One critical issue in the design was that the historical steel beam ceilings, with their brick and concrete infill, would no longer have been viable in a modernisation that complied with current standards.

The solution: almost one thousand original steel beams were structurally reinforced on site. To increase their cross-section, they were temporarily relieved of their load with the aid of hydraulic presses while still in place and plates were then welded to the top and bottom. Due to controversial assessments of the weldability of the old steel, KREBS+KIEFE coordinated closely with the test engineer and had the work supervised by an expert. All told, more than 18,000 metres of weld seam were created in the process.
