Palais-Qartier Frankfurt am Main

A “canyon” over The Zeil street

Two high-rise buildings, one shopping centre and the Palais Thurn und Taxis, rebuilt according to the historical model, combine to form a multi-functional quarter in the best inner city location in Frankfurt. The new build comprises four building sections built over one underground car park with 77.000 m2 retail space, 48.000 m2 office space, 33.000 m2 restaurant and hotel space plus 1.400 parking spaces in the basement level.

KREBS+KIEFER built the supporting structure in conjunction with partners. What was particularly exciting was the work being done on MyZeil’s impressive free-form roof: A “canyon” extends through the middle of the mall as an architectural idea that funnels daylight right down to the ground floor of the shopping centre. The engineers used a filigree steel structure as the support, with triangular mesh panels that enable very wide span for a minimal cross-section. Organic openings in the ceiling provide interesting views into and through the construction.
