Olympic Stadium Berlin
Synthesis of old and new
Construction of a canopy over the Olympiastadion Berlin was one of the great engineering tasks in the modernisation and historic preservation of the then 70-year old structure. The inner edge of the 68 meter wide, circumferential canopy over the stands is covered by a transparent membrane and glass. The load is transferred by 20 slender, tree-shaped props in the upper tier, supported by 132 steel pillars anchored above stone columns in the region of the roof parapet.
For the design and planning of this airy and light-flooded stadium roofing, KREBS+KIEFER together with the architects were honoured with the Prize for German Steel Construction (Preis des Deutschen Stahlbaues). The jury was especially impressed by the fact that the function as sports arena was evident "without masking the history". Also the renovation and refurbishment of the landmark concrete upper tier structure, from damage analysis to planning of the intermediate construction stages, from the new construction of the lower tier to the construction of underground garages, was conducted under the direction of KREBS+KIEFER—as was the entire modernisation of the Olympiastadion—during the regular playing season.
