Lufthansa City Mobile Frankfurt/Main
For a time, an over-sized, free-hanging mobile caught the eye in the atrium of the A-PLUS boarding gate at Frankfurt Airport. The silhouettes of twelve sites, three aircraft models of the Lufthansa fleet and the company logo were balanced on a construction made of several curved beams and barely visible steel cables.
The atrium ceiling is only designed to take small additional loads. KREBS+KIEFER therefore selected a support structure made from thin-walled pipes of high-strength aluminium. In the case of the connections within the suspension, different tools came together, which is why possible effects of the melding process on the ease of assembly on the one hand and on the durability on the other hand had to be weighed up against one another. Because the artwork had to be mobile, the influence of air movements also played a role in the calculations.
