European Plaza Kiev, Ukraine
In the thick of things and flying high
The „European Plaza“, a building ensemble consisting of a hotel, a high-rise apartment block and a shopping centre with underground parking, is part of the transformation of European Square in Kiev. The high-rise block rests on four basement levels and with its 42 above-ground levels towers over five hundred feet above the surrounding old town. A subterranean walkway extends under European Square and parts of the adjoining boulevard, providing an area for shopping and underground parking.
The whole ensemble is designated by Ukrainian planning law as a so-called “experimental building”. In obtaining planning permission, KREBS+KIEFER agreed the design with the local authorities. The high-rise block is built around a reinforced concrete core, the dimensions of which were established by engineers according to dynamic analysis. The excavated area was reinforced using the reasonably priced cut and cover method. Only construction methods which were technically possible in Ukraine and had been tested in the country were available for selection.
