Trz Nikolskiy Shopping Centre Kharkov
Tension creates style
A six-floor shopping centre is being built in Kharkov, Ukraine’s second largest city. In addition to a large supermarket and around one hundred and fifty shops, the building will accommodate a six-screen cinema with 800 seats and a swimming pool with wellness and fitness facilities. In the sublevels, in addition to car parking spaces, there will be a passageway to the neighbouring underground station and access for lorries to deliver goods to the supermarkets.
In the centre of the shopping area, there are plans to open a support-free atrium, whose curved and undulating glass roof will let in plenty of daylight. The highly sophisticated steel construction of the connecting bridges on each floor was accomplished by the planners using underspanned supporting structures.
Part of the swimming pool is spanned by a roof design constructed of steel trusses arranged in the shape of a triangle, with one lower flange and two upper flanges. The approximately 26-metre-long trusses lie on top of supports positioned every 8.6 metres. Part of the cinema roof has been designed with 17-metre-long trusses. Due to the wide spans, binding beam ceilings are used in the area adjacent to the atrium.
