Dubai Sports City United Arab Emirates
Visionary sports oasis
In 2006, the world's largest sports centre began development in the Arab Emirate of Dubai. Four stadiums form the main attraction of a new sports-focused district. Arranged in a semicircle and surrounded by a huge shopping mall, the complex will consist of a cricket stadium for 25.000 spectators, a hockey stadium for 10.000 fans and a multi-purpose stadium for football, athletics, rugby and American football. With an external diameter of 265 m, the stadium seats 60.000 spectators. There is a covered multi-function hall for other sports and concerts – with an equally impressive diameter of 140 m.
The stadium bowl structures have pile foundations and consist of a combination of pre-cast elements with in-situ concrete. The roof constructions of the stadiums consist of intersecting lattice girders, the upper and lower surfaces being covered by a membrane. The stadiums were measured in accordance with British Standards and the earthquake calculations comply with the Uniform Building Code.
