Stasi Museum Berlin
Fire safety a top priority
The high-rise building in Normannenstraße was the central headquarters of the "Stasi" until 1989. From this location, Erich Mielke was the last person to be in charge of the Ministry for State Security for the German Democratic Republic. Nowadays, the listed building houses a documentation and educational centre about the political system in the GDR, covering Stasi activities, opposition and resistance.
Above all, the goal of the redevelopment was to rectify deficits in the building’s fire safety precautions. Particular attention was paid to the protection of historical objects, such as the original furnishings of the office and work space of Erich Mielke. In this regard KREBS+KIEFER developed a comprehensive fire safety plan. The necessary emergency escape routes were achieved by constructing two additional stairwells. Furthermore, a comprehensive fire alarm system was installed, with an audible alarm and a direct connection to the fire service.
