Renovation of Schöneberg town hall’s exhibition hall Berlin

Monumental fire prevention

The exhibition hall of Schöneberg town hall is historically listed and consists of a covered inner courtyard. There are corridors on all four sides, which act as escape routes for users of the adjacent offices in the event of fire. The corridors are linked to the exhibition hall by many windows, however these historic windows do not provide sufficient resistance against fire and do not meet the requirements of smoke protection. To enable these to be retained, KREBS+KIEFER’s concept was based around building-specific fire prevention targets.

This involved using suitable measures to ensure that a fire will not spread until the fire brigade arrive and that all individuals within the building can escape. Automatic smoke detectors with acoustic alarms and an automatic fire extinguishing system were installed for the exhibition hall. The sprinkler system simultaneously compensates for the lack of fire resistance provided by the roof - a riveted steel construction with wooden windows.
