Infrastructure in the freight yard Freiburg in Breisgau

Alpen-Express

Between Freiburg and the Italian city of Novara runs a "rolling autobahn" (Rola). By this we mean the transport of trucks on freight trains through the Alps. The modernisation of the Rola-facility in the Freiburg freight yard was aimed at allowing trucks coming from the north to drive up onto the trains. This way they will be standing in driving direction during transport as required, without entire trains having to be turned around first with all the effort that entails.

KREBS+KIEFER by order of the Rola-operator, Swiss RAlpin AG, took on the project management for this undertaking, which included building a new access road, relocating the loading zone, work on the tracks and overhead wires as well as a new terminal building. The primary challenge in carrying out the task was that building work took place not only on the inventory, but also during ongoing Rola-operations.
