New railway line Rhine/Main - Rhine/Neckar
Closing a gap in the trans-European network
The aim was to increase the efficiency of the heavily overloaded rail corridor and in doing so, to close a gap in the trans-European high-speed rail network. KREBS+KIEFER was involved in the development from the word go, conducting studies on network development, feasibility and the Mannheim/Rhein-Neckar railway station. In cooperation with a partner office, KREBS+KIEFER later developed the implementation and approval planning for two of four phases.
The Phase 3 area, "Bergstraße", is located in the Rhine valley. Accordingly, the diverse concerns of the residents and of nature conservation had to be observed and coordinated. In Phase 4, "Mannheim", the new line switches from Hessen to Baden-Württemberg, turns in the direction of Mannheim central station and then passes by in an easterly direction. The main focus here was on the planning of traffic facilities and engineering works, which involved a comparison of several alternatives. The scope of services included the preparation of planning results and environmental expertise for the planning permission hearings, cost estimates and coordination with the public authorities.
