Birkenstein Station Brandenburg

Barriers aside

Until its alteration in the framework of the Infrastructure Acceleration Programme (IBP), the covered island platform of the Birkenstein S-Station in Berlin was reachable by means of a footbridge with stairs. Because there were no elevators or ramps, people with limited movement had to use a track crossing to get to the platform.

The goal of the renovation was to eliminate this barrier. For this purpose, lifts were constructed on both the platform as well as on the forecourt of the station. The entire northern part of the pedestrian overpass between the forecourt and the platform, including both staircases, was broken off and rebuilt in the same place with access to the new lifts.

KREBS+KIEFER was responsible for the general planning and assisted the client with planning and consultation, the DB Station and Service AG, from the initial design idea up to the planning and the completion of the facility.
