The complex hybrid construction made from steel and solid building combines time-tested principles - a vertical elevator mechanism with counterweight balancing and tub securing - with contemporary machine and control technology. During the planning stage, it was important to consider sophisticated design elements of the architectural concept, such as an unobstructed view when the ship enters the elevator mechanism. The design without crossbars resulted in considerable deformations of the machine frame. These are only manageable with costly guiding devices that continuously report the position of the tub between the pylons.

The requirements for build accuracy here go far beyond the usual – accuracy needs to be within the range of just a few millimetres. The deformations in the construction and operating states were calculated using comprehensive FE models, which also took into account interactions between the construction and the ground.
