Oxbow lake weir Quitzöbel

Thinking, planning, directing

At the point where the Havel drains into the Elbe, a system consisting of four weirs regulates the water level. Now, over 70 years after its installation, a major overhaul was needed. The Waterways Office in Magdeburg (department for new construction projects) commissioned KREBS+KIEFER with the overall planning for a part of the installation: the Altarm weir with a lock and the operations building. The contract includes all aspects of the technical planning – from solid construction through to construction using steel, steel construction for hydraulic engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering through to protection against fire, occupational health and safety and process control within the consortium alongside IRS Stahlwasserbau Consulting AG and Drivecon.

Primarily, the main concerns related to aspects to do with execution of the construction, which, down the line, would have a major impact, i.e. the optimum crane position and the necessary access for operation and maintenance. Through the increase in height of the existing retaining wall, the planners found an even simpler solution for flood control during construction than the one proposed in the tender documents.
