In the summer of 2016, it finally happened. The Erfurt branch of KREBS+KIEFER moved into new, extensively converted offices in Weimarische Straße. The offices have been furnished to appear bright, friendly and modern. The successful change led us to invite our clients and plan-ning partners to a 'Engineering office open day' on 14 September 2016 in Erfurt.
A distinction for Mr. Tarik Tiyma
On 6 December 2016, B.Eng. Tarik Tiyma was honoured with the 2016 'award for studies' from the 'Friends of FH Erfurt e. V.'. Mr. Tiyma has supported our Erfurt office since 2014 and has been a permanent member of staff since 1 November 2016. The topic of the master's thesis that the prize was awarded for was the comparative study of various variants of the Weser bridge in Hannoversch Münden.
FIDIC INTERNATIONAL CONTRACT USERS’ CONFERENCE in London
This year KREBS+KIEFER was once again represented at the FIDIC INTERNATIONAL CONTRACT USERS’ CONFERENCE in London on the 6th and 7th of December 2016. This recent event is seen as the most im-portant in the series of FIDIC Contract Users’ Conferences held around the world. Construction companies, clients, lawyers and engineers from around the world as well as representatives of multilateral development banks and financial institutions, such as EBRD, WB and EIB, use this platform both for exchanging ideas and experiences as well as an opportunity for networking.
Foundation stone laying for new vocational training and technology centre in Trier
The foundation stone of the new vocational training and technology centre of the Trier Chamber of Crafts was laid on 7 December 2016.The sinking of a copper "time capsule", which contains building plans and contemporary history documents, marked the highlight of the solemn ceremony.
Katharina Weinz MSc appointed as Head Engineer at KREBS+KIEFER Dresden
The new Head of Engineering for the structural physics division at our Dresden branch, Katharina Weinz MSc, was appointed on 01 December 2016.
KREBS+KIEFER called upon as fire safety experts for the “Spandauer Ufer” workshop procedure
Dr Huismann was appointed by the project developers of the “Spandauer Ufer” project as an expert in preventive fire safety as part of the urban development workshop procedure. The project developers, merz objektbau from Aalen and FAY Projects GmbH from Mannheim, acquired the former post office building in Klosterstraße between the Spandau Arcaden and Havel river in April of this year.
COMPARISON MEASUREMENT FOR VMPA NOISE INSULATION INSPECTION AUTHORITIES SUCCESSFULLY PASSED
Our employees, Alexander Pöhler, Julia Lutz and Tanja Adelmann-Klug of KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH Darmstadt successfully took part in comparison measurements for the sound insulation inspection authorities in accordance with the guidelines of the German metrology institute, Physikalisch Technischen Bundesanstalt (PTB) of the association of material testing institutions (Verband der Materialprüfanstalten e.V. (VMPA)) on 25/26 October 2016 at MFPA Leipzig.
SHOW MUST GO ON – Reopening and inauguration of the new stage technology at the DRESDEN PLAYHOUSE
At the end of October 2016, the Dresden Playhouse celebrated the resumption of its theatre programme with new and modern stage technology. During an extended summer break, the entire building was renovated and the roof and stage structures were upgraded so that they can support considerably larger loads.
Symposium on Sustainable Bridge-strengthening at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences
The preservation and sustainable strengthening of bridge structures for increased traffic volumes is currently one of the greatest challenges in constructive civil engineering. At the symposium, which was held on 2 November 2016 and organised by Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Concrete Information Centre and the Chamber of Engineers of Baden-Württemberg, experts reported on the latest projects and innovative methods in bridge-strengthening.

After a construction period of around one year, the topping-out ceremony for the construction of the Centre for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) at the Technical University of Dresden was celebrated on 21 October 2016 with the attendance of the Saxon Minister of Science, Dr. Eva-Maria Stange.

19th IABSE Congress - Stockholm 2016: KREBS+KIEFER out in force at the world congress for bridge and structural engineering
The congress of the ‘International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering’ (IABSE) took place between 21-23 September 2016 in Stockholm. KREBS+KIEFER held four presentations at this event, which is the world’s most important gathering of structural engineers. The congress focussed on a key theme: ‘Challenges in Design and Construction of an Innovative and Sustainable Built Environment’ which, in addition to ‘innovative sustainability’, is one of the major challenges currently affecting new builds and efforts to conserve existing structures. KREBS+KIEFER made an outstanding contribution to both the key topics.
A trial operation of the world's largest ship lift is underway at the Three Gorges Dam
18 September 2016 saw the start of the official trial operation of the ship lift for traffic passing through China's Three Gorges Dam. With a lifting height of up to 113 m for usable chamber internal dimensions of 120 m x 18 x 3.5 m for ships up to a height of 18 m and 3000 t displacement, it is currently the largest ship lift in the world.

Yes – it’s been ten whole years since Dr Richard Stroetmann, professor at TU Dresden was appointed, thereby laying the foundation for a site in the beautiful city of Dresden, dubbed as the "Florence of the Elbe".The anniversary started early for management, around midday with a surprise cakefrom the whole Dresden team as thanks for the exemplary collaboration within the company and the large number of exciting joint projects.

On 12 September 2016, the weather was kind to the employees of the KREBS + KIEFER branch offices in Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Stuttgart and Munich: At late-summer temperatures, the team started cycling on a tour totalling 45 km on the Upper Rhine plain.

Hansabrücke Herford – Installing the box girder
On 4 August and 5 August 2016 the installation of the first two box girders of the new superstructure on Hansabrücke Herford took place, which is built as an integrated steel construction with an upper flange of semi-finished parts and in-place concrete complement. This was preceded by a half-sided demolition of the old bridge in November 2015, upgrading of the stock abutment and the renewal of the centre pillar of the two-span bridge with the total length of 58 metres and width of 17 metres.

Mr Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Lutz Windmüller obtains certification as an expert in building protection and renovation
In the course of a six-month specialist training course, culminating in the examination as certified expert for building protection and renovation, Mr Windmüller extended his knowledge in avoidance of damage when planning and executing construction, in recognising the causes of damage, the evaluation of damage, developing renovation concepts and compiling expert reports.
01/07/2016 - Opening New Building For State Museum Schwerin
After only about 1 ½ years of building, the opening ceremony for the museum extension can finally take place.In the new building, the museum has about 800 square metres of additional exhibition space in two halls equipped with light ceilings without columns, to present its collections of art.The glazed passage to the old building and internal connecting stairs in the new building allow you to go round the modern collections of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Celebratory Inauguration of the Laboratory and Research New Building 6 on 22/06/2016 on the Wismar University Campus
In building 6, for the area of structural engineering of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and for the construction skill centre for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, highly-modern teaching rooms and laboratories have been developed.A challenge for the planning was to integrate the laboratory building constructed in 1988 with appropriate office buildings with respect to the necessary room program into the new building.

Appointment of Mr Christian Gabel as Managing Director
Mr Christian Gabel has been appointed on 01/07/2016 as Managing Director of our Berlin company.With this step, we are consistently pursuing the steady growth of the Building Management Division at KREBS+KIEFER over the past few years and will also be ensuring the personal supervision of our customers and their projects in the future. Mrs Köppe and Mr Gabel will manage and further develop Building Management together. The Project Management and Tunnel Safety departments shall remain the principle tasks under the control of Mrs Köppe, Mr Gabel will retain the overall responsibility for Contract Management and will also take on the Building Management/Site Supervision department now.
Opening of the Mannheim North light rail system
The Mannheim North light rail system was opened on 11.06.2016. This new light rail connection completes the 6.4 km stretch covering the districts of Neckarstadt-Ost, Käfertal, Waldhof and Gartenstadt and thus the last section of the light rail connection in Mannheim. Among those taking the maiden trip were the State Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann, the Lord Mayor Peter Kurz, the Mayor Christian Specht, representatives from the public transport companies MVV and RNV and well as numerous city councillors.
Construction of the Rastatt Tunnel officially starts
On 25.05.2016, the mining work for the Rastatt Tunnel officially began in the presence of numerous prominent figures. The tunnelling under the town of Rastatt is to begin with two single-track tunnel sections, each 4,277 m long. The rail trail for the upgraded line and new line between Karlsruhe and Basel descends into the depths at Ötigheim and reappears at the surface to the south of Rastatt approximately 4.3 km further on.
Teubert Bridge – Worth preserving?
In the Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the Teubert Bridge carries the ring road across the Teltow Canal (TeK) at the 21.696 km point. The main structure, the Teubert Bridge that was constructed in around 1905, is composed under the carriageway of seven riveted steel trusses running parallel to one another.With a total span of 57.86 m, the superstructure spans the Teltow Canal as a single-span girder with overhanging ends and is supported in the area of the canal bank on heavyweight pillars. The bridge was blown up at the end of the Second World War and reconstructed in the years that followed. The superstructure was extended in 1957. Due to its significance from both a technical and architectural perspective, the Teubert Bridge was entered as a monument in the Berlin list of protected structures.
1st Hessian Fire Safety Day - KREBS+KIEFER involved with the organisation and moderation
On 27 April 2016, Peter Bitsch, the Vice-President of the Hessian Chamber of Architects and Town Planners, opened the 1st Hessian Fire Safety Day in Frankfurt am Main. The event provided first-hand information regarding innovations in the planning of fire safety focusing on technical and building law aspects.
Appointment of Mr Ludger Loers, Dipl.-Ing., as General Manager in Cologne, Germany
Mr Ludger Loers, Dipl.-Ing., is granted collective power of attorney for KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH in Cologne as of 1 May 2016. Mr Loers will further consolidate the presence of KREBS+KIEFER in NRW at our new branch in Cologne together with our Managing Directors Ms Susan Herrmann, Dipl.-Ing., and Mr Klaus Vester, Dipl.-Ing., and will be responsible there for the area of construction management.Mr Loers started his career in civil engineering at Bilfinger & Berger in Cologne and was then General Manager and Division Manager for construction management in the field of underground and tunnel construction at ZERNA Baumanagement.
CBBM Lübeck officially opened
On 26 February 2016, the international research centre, the "Center of Brain, Behavior and Metabolism" (CBBM) was officially opened in Lübeck.Three institutes – neuroradiology, neuroendocrinology and pharmacology – are housed in the new building and the research carried out there forms an important part of the activities of the foundation university in Lübeck.
Topping-out ceremony for the construction of annexe 2 of the Fachhochschule Potsdam on 03 March 2016
After completion of annexe 1 to the laboratory and workshop building in August 2013, annexe 2 represents the fourth new building on the Kiepenheuerallee Campus.With the on-schedule completion of the shell and the current topping-out ceremony, another important step in the 25-year development of the college location has been taken.

Johannes John Dipl.-Ing. receives On 11 December 2015, in a special ceremony in the Festival Hall in Dülferstraße, the best graduates from Dresden University of Technology were honoured. The Vice Chancellor of Dresden University of Technology, Professor Hans Müller-Steinhagen, personally presented the certificates and gifts.
St. Gangolf resplendent again: A renovation project reaches its final stages in Trier
With the removal of the scaffolding, the extensive renovation of St. Gangolf market church in Trier, which received a lot of attention in the city and surrounding areas, is coming to a successful conclusion. In addition to the usual stone cutting, painting, carpentry and roofing work, the Trier-based architect Karl Feils was also responsible for coordinating bell craftsmen and artist blacksmiths involved with rebuilding the bell frame and restoring the cross on the tower.KREBS+KIEFER provided support to him in this project with the planning of the scaffolding, which also presented particular challenges. For one thing, the planning had to take into account the requirements of all the types of work mentioned above.
Sören Müller has been awarded a Doctorate of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.)
On 5 February 2016, Sören Müller was awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. The topic of his dissertation was: "On the design of innovative concrete collector elements for solar-thermic parabolic trough power plants".

KREBS+KIEFER has been represented in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1 January 2016. From now on, this is where the skills and know-how of the companies Jeromin+Vester and KREBS+KIEFER will be combined under the name KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH in Cologne.With the integration of the Cologne-based company Jeromin+Vester, and with the acquisition in North Rhine-Westphalia of a verification engineer, Mr Klaus Vester, a further step in the nationwide expansion and presence of our company has been taken.
Recognition as a verification engineer for structural design in the specialisation of solid construction for Dipl.-Ing. Steffen Böhm and appointment as managing partner
We are pleased to announce that Dipl.-Ing. Steffen Böhm has received his admission as a verification engineer in the specialisation of solid construction by the highest building authority in the State of Hesse. With effect from 1 January 2016, Mr Steffen Böhm, Dipl.-Ing., was accepted as a partner and appointed to the post of managing partner of KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH in Darmstadt by the general assembly of KREBS+KIEFER Partner GbR. In the future, he will support the management of KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH in Darmstadt, strengthen civil engineering in Darmstadt with his knowledge and experience and thus contribute to the positive development of the company.
Rhine Bridge Schierstein – Floating into position and lifting the middle piece
On the Schierstein bridge between Wiesbaden and Mainz, the middle piece was floated into position over the Biebrich arm of the Rhine and then lifted between the existing bridge sections on 19 January 2016.From 8:00 am on, the about 2,000 tonne heavy superstructure member with a length of 120 metres was brought on a pontoon from the assembly area on the Rhine shore to its final position. The pontoon was drawn with ropes against the current of the river during a complete navigation lock of the Rhine. After several hours of driving, the bridge part was fastened to strand jacks and lifted.In the coming weeks, the middle piece will be connected to the superstructure by welded joints. Then the work will be continued on the superstructure in the Mombach arm of the Rhine.
Poster party of the tunnel bore for the Karlsruhe combined solution
On 19 January 2016, among the active participation of invited guests and project participants, the poster party took place for the Karl-Friedrich Street to be created in the tunnel, to be bored out in the excavation of the future Ettlinger Tor stop in Karlsruhe.The tunnel bore will be established in the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) at a length of around 250 metres as the connection between the future underground Ettlinger Tor and Marktplatz stations. Due to the surrounding soil (sand and Rhine gravel) as well as the location below the groundwater table, the tunnel will be mined with an atmospheric excess pressure of about one bar.
Roofing ceremony for the newly constructed administrative centre in Freiburg
On 17 December 2015, the roofing ceremony for the 5-storey shell of the central administrative centre in Freiburg, with its associated day-care centre, was celebrated after just 9 months of construction time. In bright sunshine, Freiburg’s Lord Mayor Dr Dieter Salomon praised the good and quick work of the project team and craftsmen in the presence of the City Councillor for building and construction, Professor Haag, as well as a number of members of the city council.
Conversion of the Erfurt Steigerwald stadium into a modern multi-purpose arena
Construction work has been proceeding on the grounds of the Steigerwald stadium in Erfurt since 05 January 2015. Based on the plans of HPP architects from Düsseldorf, the conversion is being carried out in construction phases while games are still being played at the stadium.The dismantling of the earth wall grandstand was started on the east side. Subsequently, the new construction of the main building with the east grandstand in front then took place in this area. In June 2015, work to construct the north grandstand began and the dismantling of the old south grandstand will begin at the end of January 2016. The covered grandstand on the west side, which was built in 1994, shall remain fully intact.
Traffic release of Erfurt – Halle/Leipzig high-speed railway
On 13 December 2015, the route of the Erfurt – Halle/Leipzig high-speed railway, costing approximately EUR 3 billion, was inaugurated in the presence of the German Chancellor. The major portion of the connection between Bavaria and Berlin is now in operation. The journey times on the ICE for the 121 kilometres between Erfurt and Leipzig are thus shortened from 70 to 43 minutes and for the 92 kilometres between Erfurt and Halle from 75 to 34 minutes.KREBS+KIEFER was very much involved in the planning and implementation here and made a significant contribution to the successful commissioning.
Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Mr Torsten Brüggemann and Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Mr Alwin Hoffmann become senior engineers at KREBS+KIEFER Mainz
On 01 January 2016, our Mainz employees Torsten Brüggemann and Alwin Hoffmann were appointed the role of Senior Engineer. Mr Brüggemann successfully acquires and manages numerous projects, especially in the field of “refurbishment”. Mr Brüggemann has been working as a Project Manager at our company since 2011 and is also a certified Structural Engineer in the care and preservation of monuments.

Dipl.-Ing. (TU) Rene Horschig is granted collective power of attorney as of 01 January 2016. Rene Horschig has been working in the field of structural physics at KREBS+KIEFER in Dresden since 2011.Under his direction, the structural physics department in Dresden was able to develop into a centre of excellence, which represents the entire scope of services of thermal structural physics, building acoustics and room acoustics.
